Get ready for an all-out good time at the Highland Center for the Arts as we host our very first Poetry Slam! Slam sign-ups start at 6:30 pm and the Slam starts at 7 pm. Whether you are bringing poems or in the audience grab some food and beverages at the Hardwick Cafe!
We are thrilled to be hosting spoken word poet, writer, and all around fun guy Kevin Devaney to Greensboro! Devaney has traveled all over the country writing and performing poetry. Not only is he a fine poet but he is a SLAM poet!
What’s a poetry slam?*
Poetry slam is the competitive art of performance poetry, invented in the 1980s by a Chicago construction worker named Marc Smith. Poets perform their own original work and are judged Olympic-style by members of the audience.
What’s the difference between an open mic and an open poetry slam?*
Open mic performers have one stage opportunity to earn a round of applause. Slammers perform original poems in a three-round scored competition and are judged by 4-5 audience members to proceed into consequtive rounds.
