Our Vision - Create An Engaging and Beautiful Community Greenspace

In January 2016, a two-acre property in Craftsbury Village was donated to Wonder & Wisdom. Usable materials were salvaged, a tent sale was held, and the deteriorated buildings were razed in April. Community members volunteered and contributed financial gifts of support. The Vermont Community Foundation's Green Mountain Fund and Craftsbury Community Fund provided grants.

Landscaping was completed to create a grassy common and hillside amphitheater. An observation deck and performance stage were constructed in June and July. Afterschool kids from Wonder & Wisdom, and students from Craftsbury Academy and Sterling College, helped to clean up the property and build trails.

The greenspace is located at the south gateway to Craftsbury Village, diagonally opposite from Pete's Greens. The two-acre site is ideal for programming partnerships. Through support from the Vermont Community Foundation and the Vermont Arts Council, The Art House completed a beautiful labyrinth on the east end of the greenspace, which opened in August 2016.

The new greenspace is coming alive as a venue for the arts, education, and recreation. Your support in 2017 will help us realize the full vision of this property as a shared community resource. Read more to learn how you can help!

Here are a few ideas already underway for the new greenspace:

  • Create a natural playground for children to explore
  • Utilize the grassy hillside amphitheater for music and theater
  • Restore the riparian stream habitat running across the site
  • Install a sculpture garden, labyrinth, and meditative paths
  • Establish a trail head for cross country skiing and snowshoeing
  • Complete an elevated board walk through the wetland areas

The Next Step

Costs for Phase I (2016) of the project were $28,000, of which $26,500 was raised. Costs for Phase II (2017) to continue the project are estimated to be $5,000.

Your tax deductible gift will help Wonder & Wisdom maintain the greenspace for sustainable community use. Please be generous in your support. Thank you!
